They’ve had their heads buried in the sand, like this Ostrich!
On Friday 6th December, activists targeted CCHQ, criticising the Conservative Government, for their record on climate in-action. Putting the UN Secretary General’s recent remarks directly to them, they asked:
“Do we really want to be remembered as the generation that buried its head in the sand?”
The Conservatives are five times as likely to vote against climate action as legislators from other parties.
The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Uxbridge is among dozens of Conservative MPs to record the worst possible environmental score on voting records.
The Tories have registered more donations, shares, salaries, gifts and tickets to sporting events from fossil fuel companies, petro-states, aviation companies and climate sceptics, according to declarations made in the parliamentary record of MPs’ interests between 2008 and 2019. We cannot allow our Government to be influenced by climate change denying Think Tanks.”
While Extinction Rebellion does not endorse candidates or parties, we must call out reckless inaction when we see it and hold politicians to account.
“Beyond politics is not an acceptance of political parties refusing to address the climate and ecological crisis facing the planet. It is a recognition that governments have failed us, and we must trust ourselves. Our government must be led by a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.”
As a movement we are proponents of Telling the Truth. We must highlight failings in the last government.
The Conservative party are failing to engage with the Climate Debate in this election:
- The Tories and the Brexit Party have been the least represented at climate hustings (national and local), even being replaced by an ice sculpture in Channels 4’s Climate debate.
- The Tories and the Brexit Party are the least represented in terms of signing up to Extinction Rebellion’s 3 Demands Bill.
- The Tories and the Brexit Party have not met with Extinction Rebellion hunger strikers.
Whichever party wins this election, we will still have a long way to go in recognising and acting on the depth and scale of change that is required. But right now, we can make a significant change.
Make up your own mind – If Candidates won’t participate in debate on the defining issue of our time, will they act on it in Government?
Your climate, your vote, your choice. #ActNow
What happens in the next 12 months is crucial. Why are XR targeting all Parties? Because there is a long way to go to recognise the urgency of the emergency. We cannot continue to open coal mines, or infrastructure projects like HS2 or Airport expansions. These are simply incompatible with the emergency we are in.
